Minister of Foreign Affairs

Dear Madam:

I would like to draw your attention to a recent summary trial on April 5, 2018 by the People’s Court in Hanoi, Vietnam, of 6 peaceful political dissidents belonging to a group called Brotherhood for Democracy.  According to Reporters Without Borders (https://rsf.org/en/news/six-vietnamese-bloggers-get-exceptionally-long-jail-terms), these individuals were given lengthy prison sentences for “carrying out activities aimed at overthrowing the people’s administration”.

In addition, member Nguyen Van Tuc, a blogger, was sentenced on April 10, 2018 in Thai Binh to 13 years in prison and five years of house arrest, and member Tran Thi Xuan was sentenced on April 11, 2018 in Nghe An to 9 years in prison and 5 years in house arrest.

These trials show, once again, the Vietnamese Communist government’s blatant disregard of the fundamental freedom of speech of its citizens, in contravention of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of which Vietnam is one of the signatories.

We urge you to write to the Government of Vietnam to express, together with our allies such the U.S., Australia, and the European Union, and other international human rights organizations, your indignation over the harsh treatment of political dissidents by Vietnamese authorities, and to demand that they immediately and unconditionally release these prisoners of conscience.

Trusting that our request will receive your approval, I remain,

Yours sincerely

Khue-Tu Nguyen (Ms.), President
